Starling House: A Unique Gothic Retelling You Can’t Miss by Alix E. Harrow
Summary
Opal is a young woman stuck in a small town full of nothing but misfortune who takes a job working for a mysterious man in an equally mysterious house. As she settles in, she begins to uncover the dark truth about the man, the house, and her own past. What starts as a light Beauty and the Beast–style retelling grows into something far more original, emotional, and haunting.
Rating:
Front Row Shelf Excellent: gripping, richly atmospheric, and driven by characters who stay with you long after you’re done.
Initial Reaction
Ever since my high school teacher joked that Beauty and the Beast is basically “love an ugly guy long enough and he’ll turn into a prince,” I haven’t been able to take the original story seriously. But Starling House a retelling loosely tied to that classic reminded me how powerful the bones of that tale can be when someone transforms it into something new.
3 Things I Liked
- The characters are phenomenal Opal, her brother, and the man in the house each have layered, fascinating stories. Every single one kept me guessing until the very end.
- The pacing is perfect I was hooked the whole time. I absolutely couldn’t put it down, especially during the final stretch.
- A retelling that stands on its own Sure, there’s the girl who doesn’t fit in, the gruff man, and the library… but this story isn’t riding on the fairy tale. It’s its own tremendous, independent narrative.
3 Things I Didn’t Like
- I want a sequel and I’m annoyed I can’t have one Not a real critique, just a selfish complaint because I loved these characters so much.
- Opal’s world is so rich I wanted even more time in it Again, more of a desire than a flaw.
- This book made me feel everything From deep sadness to visceral anger to love. It’s not a light read. That’s not bad, but it can be intense.
Who Should Read This?
Readers who love mystery, gothic atmosphere, complex characters, and a touch of romance. If you enjoy retellings that only nod to the original instead of copying it, you’ll devour this.
Who Should Skip It?
Anyone who wants a breezy, light read or prefers straightforward romances without heavy emotion. If you avoid books that take you through the emotional wringer, this may hit too hard.
Final Thoughts
I loved this book. It’s gripping, beautifully emotional, and impossible to put down. You’ll go through every feeling, but it’s worth it. If you’re looking for a story that blends mystery, gothic tension, and deep emotion with a romance woven gently through it this is absolutely a must-read.
