Why I DNF’d These Popular Romance Novels

BOOK NAME: The Matchmaker’s List by Sonya Lalli

HOW FAR I GOT: About halfway through

WHY I DNF’D: This book was hitting way too close to home. If you are of South Asian descent, or anyone really with parents who want you to get married and you’re around 30 (or a little bit older or younger, but around that age), this book will probably give you stress dreams. This author does a good job of capturing what it’s like to be South Asian and being pressured by your parents, being guilted by them, and showing just how much we tolerate from our parents when it comes to getting us married. I just had to put it down for my mental sanity.

WILL I COME BACK? Maybe once I’m happily married – if I get married. But until then, I think I’m good.

NOTE: Obviously this is not a knock against the book. The book is so well-written and the story is good. I just personally had to take a step back.

BOOK NAME: One Day in December by Josie Silver

HOW FAR I GOT: Halfway through

WHY I DNF’D: This is another book that I thought was very good, but my heart just cannot handle a love triangle – or a love square or whatever this was in this book. It gives me anxiety more than it gives the character anxiety, I think. So for that reason, I did DNF it.

WILL I COME BACK? I think this is a book that I definitely will come back to, maybe when I’m a bit more relaxed.

NOTE: I really want to say this is a good book. You actually could read it maybe you’re not as anxious as I am.

BOOK NAME: Miranda in Retrograde by Lauren Layne

HOW FAR I GOT: Halfway through

WHY I DNF’D: I just found this book kind of boring, which is funny because I love astrology and I love a good romance book. But I got halfway through and I just had no motivation to finish it.

WILL I COME BACK? No, definitely not something I’m interested in finishing.

NOTE: I think if you’re looking for a fun read, this may be a good book for you.

BOOK NAME: Gives Me Butterflies by Jillian Meadows

HOW FAR I GOT: About halfway through

WHY I DNF’D: Once again, nothing wrong with this book, but I just found myself not able to connect to the characters. I got about halfway through and it still didn’t catch my attention.

WILL I COME BACK? No, I will definitely not be coming back to this book.

NOTE: Nothing wrong with the book overall. I think it’s a solid romance book and could possibly be a good read if the story intrigues you and the characters intrigue you as well.

BOOK NAME: The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

HOW FAR I GOT: About halfway through

WHY I DNF’D: I cannot handle a miscommunication trope. You’re telling me all of this can be resolved by two people sitting down and just talking? I’m out, I’m out. Just sit down and talk! I know people love this book, I know people love Ali, and if you do, more power to you. But miscommunication frustrates me and I just had to drop this book.

WILL I COME BACK? No, I definitely will not be coming back to this book.
